CONTINUING THE TRADITION OF WORSHIP IN AMERICA'S FIRST CITY: The very first Christian worship service in what would become the United States happened right here in Pensacola, Florida, on September 15, 1559. This service was part of the De Luna Expedition, led by Tristán de Luna y Arellano, who was attempting to establish a Spanish settlement.
The service was led by Reverend Francisco López, a Protestant chaplain accompanying the expedition. The first service is commemorated on Pensacola Beach by the Beach Cross, which stands atop the dunes.
We are proud to continue the tradition of Christian worship in Pensacola.
